Bobby Boyd Player of the Month for Quad Cities River Bandits

Bobby Boyd Player of the Month

Outfielder Bobby Boyd is the Quad Cities River Bandits Player of the Month for August, and right-handed pitcher Dean Deetz is the team's Pitcher of the Month, the Houston Astros announced on Wednesday.

The Houston Astros Player Development Department named a Player and Pitcher of the Month at each of their minor league affiliates. These awards are chosen every month by the field staff of each team. Led by the River Bandits' 85-48 record through Tuesday, the Astros had the best combined overall minor league record among all major league clubs at 481-390 - a .552 winning percentage. Seven of the Astros' nine minor league clubs clinched playoff spots this season.

Boyd, drafted in the eighth round by Houston in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of West Virginia University, led the River Bandits with a .330 batting average, 32 hits, and 10 stolen bases. The 22-year-old Sliver Springs, Md, native also had a .405 on-base percentage, three doubles, nine RBIs, and reached base in all 15 home games, including hitting safely in the first 14. Boyd's home hitting streak, which began on July 3, snapped Aug. 29 after 22 games - tied for the second-longest such streak in the Midwest League this season. Boyd's 34 stolen bases through August ranked fourth in the Midwest League, second among Astros minor leaguers to former River Bandit Tony Kemp (35) and as the most in a season by a Quad Cities player since Matt Lemanczyk stole 48 in 2005.

Deetz, selected by the Astros in the 11th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, made five starts for the River Bandits in August, compiling a 4-1 record and allowing two runs - one earned - in 27 innings for a 0.33 ERA - the lowest among all Astros full-season minor leaguers. The 21-year old from Nixa, Mo., allowed 10 hits for a .106 opponents' average while walking nine batters and striking out 22, including a career-high nine in seven no-hit innings against Clinton Aug. 24, for which he was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 24-30.

For other Houston Astros affiliates, six former River Bandits were recognized as a Player or Pitcher of the Month in August. Tyler White (2014) was the Player of the Month for the second straight month for Triple-A Fresno, while Jordan Jankowski (2013) was the Pitcher of the Month. For Double-A Corpus Christi, Michael Feliz (2014) was the Pitcher of the Month for the second month in a row, and Jon Kemmer (2014) was the Player of the Month - the same honor he received in June. For Class-A Advanced Lancaster, James Ramsay (2014) won Player of the Month, and Francis Martes, who pitched with Quad Cities this May 19-July 17, was the Pitcher of the Month.
